Phil Robertson and Miss Kay renewed their vows on the recently aired season premiere of Duck Dynasty after a whopping 49 years of marriage. On the show, Phil and Miss Kay appear to be just as in love as any couple could be, but things haven’t always been so perfect. In fact, the two were once separated because of Phil’s wild ways.
According to The Enquirer, Phil was quite the drinker when he was younger and it often led to some not-so-husbandly behavior. On one particular occasion, it led to violence. “When Phil was a young man in his 20s he leased a gritty dive bar, but when the couple who owned it tried to raise the rent, Phil got into a violent fight with them,” the report states. “He ended up beating them so savagely they had to be rushed to the hospital.”
Following the incident, Phil fled the state. “State troopers were searching for him, so he runs into the woods and lives in the woods for four months running from the law,” his son Willie reveals to the magazine.
At the time, Miss Kay was a young girl, having tied the knot at just 15, and was able to “sweet-talk” the owners out of filing charges on her husband. However, that was just the beginning of the couple’s troubles.
Once Miss Kay realized that Phil’s drinking was becoming a problem, she tried to get him to quit the habit but that only made things worse. As a result of Miss Kay’s request, Phil threw her and their children out of the house, likely so he could continue in his ways without complaint. Eventually, Phil gave his life to the Lord and embarked on a much better, healthier lifestyle which Miss Kay happily came home to.
“You would never guess it from watching the show because Phil and Miss Kay are so much in love and devoted to each other,” a source adds. “He came close to losing everything, and Miss Kay was so sick of Phil she wanted a divorce.”
Duck Dynasty airs Wednesdays at 10/9c on A&E.
