Jessica Biel played a stripper in flop movie Powder Blue. The 29-year-old sounds surprised that nudity is the only thing anyone can talk about: “It’s unfortunate. It was brutal for a while. There was so much more that we put into it. [However] I wasn’t so scarred by the experience that I wouldn’t do it again. If a director I trusted came to me with an amazing opportunity and it felt organic, I would do it.”
Here’s the thing: that was the movie’s selling point, and it was deliberate.
Biel was nude in the movie’s promotional material, the leaked stills and the leaked trailer. Weeks before the movie’s release, every inch of Biel had been screencapped and posted on the Internet. That was all anyone wanted to talk about/ ask her about. Moreover, it was the focus of the movie’s marketing efforts. The producers tried to distract from the film’s flaws and they ended up with a critical and box office flop (it 25% rating on Rotten Tomatoes). And yet she’s surprised it became the only talking point for a film with no other redeeming qualities. Nudity’s passe, it won’t distract or compensate for an overall poor movie.
