The scandal of the summer before Kristen Stewart cheated in a parking lot was Mariah Carey deigning to get dirty on reality television.
Carey was angry with the wrong person though.
It was reported that FOX paid Carey approx. $18 million (the number grew from $12 million to $18 million over the course of a day’s reporting) on Carey’s insistence that she must be the only woman on the panel. Immediately after, producers approached Katy Perry with an offer of $18 million, increased to $20 million ($2 million more than Carey) when Perry said “no,” but Perry wasn’t interested. Eventually, Randy Jackson was confirmed, as was Keith Urban, and Minaj.
And according to Minaj, producers favoured her over Carey about which the rapper wrote on Twitter: “I guess it hurts 2 have the producers tell u to ur face that nicki is the best judge we’ve had since simon. Awww, poor u. Keep them lies cmn”
It was all free publicity although it felt very contrived. Producers denied staging it, explaining that summer was too early to solicit publicity. However, former Idol judge Steven Tyler said: “Of course [it's fake]. Are you kidding.” And The Voice’s Cee-Lo said: “This is Hollywood… Hardly anything’s legit.”
Well, contrived for publicity or no, it’s nearly here. The season 12 premiere trailer has been released. You can watch the video here.
