Us Weekly Baby Weight Battles: Kate Middleton “Too Thin?” Kim Kardashian “Too Fat?”
April 10, 2013 by Hollywoodite
Previously, in the face of competing tabloids calling Kim Kardashian “fat,” Us Weekly Magazine basically stroked Kris Jenner’s ego by writing a cloying rebuttal on its own cover saying to leave Kardashian alone. This is the tabloid that gets a lot of the family’s exclusives like going on Kardashian’s honeymoon with Kris Humphries. Star, ITW, Life & Style and National Enquirer claimed Kardashian was “200 lbs” in a mocking tone on their covers, where Us Weekly seemed more interested in protecting its fiduciary interest in the family… until now, taking a risk on an oddly-worded cover.
It’s not as bad as it first appears, though.
Above is this week’s cover. To preface… Kate Middleton is about 5 ft 10-11. Kardashian is only about 5 ft 2. So, at the same point in pregnancy, the two women are not comparable because not only is every pregnancy different but there’s nearly a foot difference in height that’s throwing off people’s perceptions.
The cover says “Baby Weight Battle. Too Thin? Too Fat? Both six months pregnant, Kate and Kim are constantly bullied and judged. Inside their support systems and how they fight back.”
Us has always been the softer, gentler tabloid, and this story is all about how Kim and Kate are “sick of being bullied” and “ignore the haters.”
Their story points to cruel covers of In Touch and Star as being part of the problem, and an “insider” says: “Unflattering photos of Kim are selling so well, it’s become like a sport for photographers to shoot her from awful angles.”
Meanwhile, Kate gets attacked for not gaining enough weight.
The editors got a quote on this important issue from icon Gloria Steinem, who says: “Our bodies are not public property. It’s wrong!” – via Jezebel.
