Johnny Depp Apologizes For Rape Comment In Vanity Fair Interview

October 5, 2011 by Hollywoodite

Johnny Depp covered Vanity Fair for the second time in a year. He had nothing spectacular to add, except to brag and make a dumb rape comment. He really just exposed himself in a classic, ‘Ho, sit down’ moment when he compared his pampered celebrity to sexual assault.

Kristen Stewart did the same last year, when she compared paparazzi pictures to rape scenes. She later apologize and all was forgotten. Depp’s comment had even less context and relevance. For instance, he’s photographed by Terry Richardson for this cover and yet Depp called staged shoots like this one “rape.” So, it’s like he was violated sexually by Uncle Terry, right?

In his interview, Depp said “You just feel like you’re being raped somehow. Raped. The whole thing. It feels like a kind of weird… just weird, man. Whenever you have a photo shoot or something like that, it’s like… you just feel dumb. It’s just so stupid.”

His comments were picked up by RAINN, the Rape Abuse And Incest National Network: “While photos may feel at times intrusive, being photographed in no way compares to rape, a violent crime which affects another American every 2 minutes. RAINN welcomes the opportunity to speak with Mr. Depp and educate him about the real life experiences faced by survivors every day, and ways that he can work with RAINN to help.” They weren’t attacking him, nor his comments… but his ignorance. It was a teachable moment and it’s an appropriate response.

And we got an immediate, contrite sounding apology: “I am truly sorry for offending anyone in any way. I never meant to. It was a poor choice of words on my part in an effort to explain a feeling. I understand there is no comparison and I am very regretful. In an effort to correct my lack of judgment, please accept my heartfelt apology.”
