Here Comes Honey Boo Boo: What Is Mike “Sugar Bear” Thompson’s Job? Where Does He Work?
The more episodes of TLC’s Toddlers & Tiaras spin-off Here Comes Honey Boo Boo that air with Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson and her family in their native rural McIntyre, Georgia the more people who ask where the family gets the money to pay for Honey Boo Boo’s pageant dresses, props, travel etc.
In the teasers released ahead of the HCHBB pilot, the family including Honey Boo Boo’s father David Michael “Sugar Bear” Thompson and mother June “Mama” Shannon are shown at auction. They go to the local auction “every week on Fridays,” where the mother bids on expired and stolen food to save money for pageants. In addition, they often find cheap pageant props at the same auction.
Mama is also an extreme couponer, previously featured on the television show of the same name. On TLC’s Extreme Couponing, Mama could be seen explaining the stockpiles of food and paper products seen around the house on HCHBB. She admits, people in the stores assume she has bowel issues, when she’s only getting the toilet rolls in bulk because it’s often free with her coupons.
In addition, Mama’s father (Honey Boo Boo’s maternal grandfather) Marvin Shannon tells the National Enquirer, ”June has been in the welfare program all of her life.” She worked at a warehouse, where she was injured when a forklift ran over her foot. And she receives child support for some of the minor children. For example, Jessica “Chubbs” Shannon’s father Michael Anthony Ford (note: Sugar Bear is not Chubbs’ father) at one point “paid $300 a month in child support for years.”
Sugar Bear provides for the family too. Mama explains on the show, Sugar Bear works seven-days-a-week. So, what is his occupation? Thompson, 40, works for Snowco General Contractors. He says of his job on his Facebook page: “I work for snowco general contractors in mcintrye for almost 8 yrs I work in the chalk mines and love it.” He is also a volunteer firefighter in Irwinton, GA.
