Shark Attack: 14 Foot Shark Kills Man In New Zealand As Horrified Tourists Watch

Police shooting at a Great White shark that attacked a swimmer in New Zealand.

A Great White shark attacked a swimmer on a New Zealand beach as hundreds of horrified tourists watched helplessly.

According to FOXNews.com, the rare attack “turn[ed] the water crimson… sparking a feeding frenzy that brought as many as four other sharks before police firing shots from a lifeboat and a helicopter chased them off and recovered the dead man’s body.”

The 46-year-old father-of-one, Adam Strange, noted as a “regular at the Muriwai surf club [who] was training for a long distance harbor swim,” had been swimming 600 feet from the shore of Muriwai Beach near Auckland.

An eyewitness saw the “huge” shark estimated to have been 14 feet long heading towards the swimmer and beckoned Strange towards nearby rocks but it was too late. ”All of a sudden there was blood everywhere,” explained Pio Mose who had been fishing nearby. “I was shaking, scared, panicked.” According to FOX, Strange initially fought off the shark… but it came back and killed him.

Other witnesses saw subsequent sharks join the attack. “He was attacked in a circle and this poor guy…in maybe five minutes he lost strength, so he just floated,” witness Christian Rasmussen said. “We just stood there and the whole surroundings was crimson.” Police on inflatable surf-lifesaving boats shot at the primary attacker which just “rolled over and disappeared.” It’s not known whether that shark was killed.

Police and lifeguards spent 30 minutes trying to recover Strange’s body as two sharks circled his remains.

The beach remains closed until further notice.
