TV News: 90210 Cancelled After Five Seasons; American Idol Gets Lowest Ratings In 10 years

March 1, 2013 by Hollywoodite

It’s a bad day for television as one show gets cancelled and another gets its lowest ratings in 10 years.

Firstly, the CW’s 90210 based on 90s hit Beverly Hill 90210 has been cancelled by the CW after only five seasons (for comparison, the CW’s Gossip Girl only had had six seasons… but it ran its course rather than actually being cancelled). The reboot will wrap with a series finale May 13.

“The CW has had five great seasons with America’s favorite zip code, 90210,” CW network president Mark Pedowitz said in a statement. “I’d like to thank the talented cast, producers, and crew for all their hard work and dedication to the series. We are very proud of the West Beverly High alumni.”

In other news, American Idol may be on its way out too with its lowest ratings in 10 years (for the record, the show has been on for 11 years). EW.com notes that, in its prime, other channels dared not compete and rearranged their schedules to avoid clashes with their own tentpoles. But no more.

Comedy does better on the night with Big Bang Theory getting great ratings and ‘Last night’s Idol had 13.1 million viewers and a 3.8 [Nielsen numbers] among adults 18-49… the lowest Idol rating since 2003 and its smallest Wednesday audience since the reality show’s summertime debut in 2002.’
