Amanda Bynes’ Parents File For Conservatorship

Today in Los Angeles, Lynn and Rick Bynes filed court documents to be granted a conservatorship for their daughter, Amanda Bynes. The filing comes on the heels of Bynes’ recent double run-in with the law on Monday in which the former child star first trespassed at a retirement community and then lit a fire in someone’s driveway. If the conservatorship is granted, Bynes’ parents would have the authority to make — and prevent — certain decisions in her life.

In the state of California, there are a few different types of conservatorships, the most common is a general conservatorship. With a general conservatorship, a person, such as one of Bynes’ parents, is put in charge of managing another person’s affairs because that person is incapable of providing for his/her own basic needs.

According to TMZ, it is unclear what exactly Bynes’ parents are looking to control, but judging by her latest actions, they will likely want to take over most of the decision making.

While many have felt as though Bynes’ parents should have taken this step months ago, it makes sense that they waited. Conservatorships are very hard to get and despite Bynes’ legal problems, there hadn’t been much evidence of her being “incapable” of caring for herself — at least not until Monday.

Following Bynes’ driveway fire on Monday, she was placed on a 5150 hold where she will remain for a minimum of 72 hours and  undergo a mental evaluation. At the time of the fire, it was said that Bynes’ explanation for what she was doing and why she was doing it was enough for authorities to question her mental health and get her professional help.

There will be a court hearing this Friday regarding the conservatorship.
