July 23, 2011 by Hollywoodite

Amy Winehouse was pronounced dead at the scene after being found in her London home today. The singer’s death is “unexplained,” according to police. The death is not being treated as suspicious and Scotland Yard suspects no foul play. There are currently police standing guard outside her home as an investigation is underway.

“Police were called by London Ambulance Service to an address in Camden Square NW1 shortly before 16.05 hrs today, Saturday 23 July, following reports of a woman found deceased,” read a press release from the Metropolitan Police. “On arrival officers found the body of a 27-year-old female [Winehouse] who was pronounced dead at the scene. Enquiries continue into the circumstances of the death. At this early stage it is being treated as unexplained.”

Winehouse was last on stage three days ago with Dionne Bromfield, during a performance of Mama Said, at the iTunes Festival in North London; Winehouse didn’t sing. Winehouse’s European tour had been cancelled after a poor performance in Serbia where she was booed off-stage. She’d been in rehab in May and was reported to have bought and consumed alcohol on the way there.

Winehouse’s father, Mitch Winehouse, is currently headed back to London from New York where he had a scheduled performance at the Blue Note jazz club on Monday.

Tony Bennett, 84, was the last person to work with Winehouse. He released a statement expressing his condolences.

“She was an extraordinary musician with a rare intuition as a vocalist and I am truly devastated that her exceptional talent and has come to such an early end. She was a lovely and intelligent person and when we recorded together she gave a soulful and extraordinary performance.”

In March, the two musicians record the classic pop standard Body and Soul at Abbey Road Studios in London. “I was honored to have the opportunity to sing with her,” Bennett tells Us. “It had been my sincere hope that she would be able to overcome the issues she was battling and I send my deepest sympathy to her father Mitchell, her entire family and all of those who loved her.” – via Us Weekly.
