Anne Hathaway Wardrobe Malfunction: Explains Les Miserables Upskirt Photo on Today Show

Anne Hathaway attended the New York City premiere of Les Miserable wearing all Tom Ford including sub-gladiator boots, with what almost resembled knee pads, and a dress with a cape and a thigh slit up one side.

Hathaway caught flack for the fashion choice, as she confidently posed on the red carpet making sure that everyone got their shots of the front (the slit and the boots), and the back (the unusual cut and the cape). It wasn’t until hours later that she faced really stern criticism, when a Splash News paparazzo upskirt photo went viral taken in the same outfit. Apparently, Hathaway was not wearing underwear when she got out of her car in the oddly-cut and ill-fitting dress that was admittedly too “tight.” And when she disembarked, she flashed the press photographers who saw everything.

There have been reactions of consternation, that the photo was taken at all and/ or that she chose not to wear underwear underneath a dress that may have hidden it (it’s not as though a VPL is high treason and it’s obviously preferable to exposing one’s self), and condemnation that the photos circulated quickly and uncensored. After all, although she’s gunning for maximum publicity, this is Hathaway not some socialite we’re talking about.

Some outlets ran the photo censored, a bunch left it uncensored, and Hathaway is horrified.

“I was getting out of the car and my dress was so tight that I didn’t realize it until I saw all the photographers’ flashes,” she told Vanity Fair writer Ingrid Sischy. “It was devastating. They saw everything. I might as well have lifted up my skirt for them.”

Informed by Matt Lauer on Today Show that he’d ”Seen a lot of you lately.” Hathaway replied:  ”It was obviously an unfortunate incident. It kind of made me sad on two accounts. One was that I was very sad that we live in an age when someone takes a picture of another person in a vulnerable moment, and rather than delete it, and do the decent thing, sells it. And I’m sorry that we live in a culture that commodifies the sexuality of unwilling participants. Which brings us back to Les Mis […] So lets get back to Les Mis.”

Here’s video of Hathaway on Today Show where she talks about the wardrobe malfunction from about 1:13. Also included are the SFW photos from the New York City Les Mis premiere December 10.
