Beyonce’s Baby Announcement Boosts Underwhelming 4 Album Sales
September 1, 2011 by Hollywoodite
Beyonce should have been patting and thanking her unborn baby for the boost in record sales with the tedious, repetitive baby announcements made at the MTV Video Music Awards. Because at the same time as she was breaking Twitter records with the reveal of a baby bump that materialised in a matter of days, she was giving herself the kind of publicity that money can’t buy.
Beyoncé’s revelation that she is pregnant with Jay-Z’s child at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night has resulted in a big boost to sales for her latest album 4, which had been underperforming commercially relative to her previous blockbuster releases. Love on Top, the album track that she performed on the show, has launched into the Top 10 on the iTunes songs chart – it’s currently sitting at Number Six but has so far peaked at Number Five. 4, which has peaked at Number Four, is currently at Number 10.
According to Nielsen Soundscan, 4 has sold fewer than 700,000 copies since it was released on June 24th. The record’s first two singles, Run the World (Girls) and The Best Thing I Never Had, have performed modestly on the charts, failing to catch on like previous smashes Crazy in Love, Irreplaceable and Single Ladies. The success of Love on Top may change the direction of how the album is promoted in the near future. The singer has been at work on videos for Party and Countdown. – via Rollng Stone.
Yeah, pretty much any music boards you could venture on at the moment are talking about this. Even Beyonce fans seem aware that her album had been under-performing, compared to its predecessors. The consensus seemed to be she could slink away and forget about poor album sales, and also forget about promoting her 4 album. But at least this album is selling a little better now. Because there’s nothing like a baby announcement that c**blocks everything else at the MTV VMAs, makes everyone forget it’s supposed to be a moment for Britney Spears, to whom the award were dedicated, and forget about the lunacy of Lady Gaga’s pilfered drag act.
