Big Brother 15: Aaryn Gries’ Mother Comes To Her Defense
September 4, 2013 by Ricky Guo
Big Brother’s Aaryn Gries is trying to clean up her image after making homophobic and racist comments in the Big Brother House and she has an ally in her mother.
Audiences were shocked when she told an Asian American contestant to “shut up and go make some rice,” and made a comment about a black contestant saying, “Be careful what you say in the dark, might not get to see the b**ch.” After the comments were made and seen across the country, the backlash began and she lost her job at a modeling agency.
On Thursday’s episode, Aaryn got evicted from the house and during the after show interview with host Julie Chen, she tried to apologized for the comments, telling Julie that she “feels horrible.” She even tried to claim that it was all a joke because of where she comes from, “in Texas, we say things that…sometimes we joke and we don’t mean it.” People still do not believe her and now her mom is coming to her defense.
Her mom, Elizabeth Owens, writes a statement to the The Times regarding her daughter’s comment.
“While I love and continue to support my daughter Aaryn, words cannot describe my disappointment in some of her comments made on Big Brother. These inappropriate comments certainly do not represent the value system under which her father and I have raised her. Aaryn is a young 22 year old college student that has spent 70 days living in a fish bowl and making mistakes for America to see.”
In her statement, Aaryn’s mother also writes how she can’t be racist because of her first true love and her prom date.
She says, “she attended her senior prom with an African American man, one of her closet friends through high school.” and “Aaryn’s first true love was Cuban American.”
She is also not happy with how the show played out. She blasts Julie Chen and Big Brother for exploiting her daughter and using it to boost their ratings. She writes, “It appears the it was beneficial for ‘Big Brother’ to focus on the negative comments made by Aaryn to boost ratings.”
Aaryn has a long road ahead her to clean up the mess that she has made.
