A new season of Breaking Amish, a whole new opportunity for TLC to obfuscate the truth about the stories of five more former Amish and Mennonite.
If you recall, the Breaking Amish season one cast (who were outed as frauds yet somehow landed a spin-off) were caught in a series of lies. They had arrests, children, marriages, and divorces that had been hidden from the show only to be revealed by Hollywoodite.com and others. Producers (of whom Amish Mafia’s Esther Freeman Schmucker is admittedly one) eventually shoehorned in those story lines hoping credulous viewers would believe it was part of a slow reveal. But it wasn’t. They were caught and, moreover, most had already left and begun living outside their communities years or even nearly a decade before being approached for the phony show by producers.
And now there’s a new cast of five, three girls and two boys (of whom the one on the far right is going to be the “new Jeremiah” right?) and PEOPLE Magazine today has landed the exclusive reveal of their names, photo, and bios. Meet, above, from left to right, Devon, Lizzie, Iva, Betsy and Matthew. Whose full names, backgrounds, social media, and REAL stories will be revealed soon enough—if you know the cast and have proof about any of the cast’s stories being inauthentic, or if you know they’re on social media where we can learn more about them, please contact us with this information.
Here are the cast bios and quotes in which the cast pretend to be wide-eyed. This season, the cast will be moving to Los Angeles!
Devon, 21, from Indiana: Unsure of his future, Devon has long been conflicted about the Amish lifestyle and hopes his time in L.A. will offer some clarity.
Iva, 19, from Pennsylvania: Her parents divorced when she was young and her father left the community while her mother stayed. Iva has explored life outside the Amish in the past, but has never before been able to make it work.
UPDATE: Iva is Jeremia Raber’s “ex-girlfriend” and she left the Amish pre-2011.
Lizzie, 21, from Pennsylvania: Lizzie harbors a secret from her large Amish family that makes her want to explore a new path, even if she has never been able to integrate with the English before.
Betsy, 21, from Ohio: Adopted as a baby into an Amish household, she recently married an Amish man, but struggles with being a member of the community and has previously tried living outside the faith.
Matt, 24, from Pennsylvania: Two of his siblings have already left the Mennonite community his family joined when he was 7, and now Matt wonders if pursuing his interest in fashion design will inspire him to follow their footsteps.
“It’s just really hard to feel like you’re trapped in a box,” says Lizzie, 21, of her reason for risking shunning to appear on the show. “No matter what you do, you can’t get out.”
“Sometimes a car goes whizzing past, and it’s just like ‘Why can’t I be in that car?’ ” says her costar, Iva, 19.
Breaking Amish season two premieres July 21 at 10 p.m. ET on TLC.
