Beliebers, if you’re worried about Justin Bieber, you’re not alone. Channing Tatum expressed his concern for Bieber in the upcoming July issue of Vanity Fair. And in light of all the recent bad press—the Biebs has been accused of everything from reckless driving to fathering a fan’s child—Tatum’s feelings are understandable.
“I worry about Bieber, man,” the 33-year-old actor admitted to Vanity Fair. “That kid’s wildly talented. I hope he doesn’t fall down into the usual ways of young kids because it’s so hard for someone to be responsible when they’re not asked to be.” It’s no secret that the privileges and freedom that often accompany fame can be immensely detrimental for young stars.
But it’s not just the teeny bopper set at risk. “We’re not asked to do things ourselves,” he continued. “You have someone there with a coffee. ‘You want food? I’ll get you food.’” With all of that luxury, even the most adult celebrity could lose touch with reality…and humility for that matter. “I put my bag in the trunk yesterday,” the new dad explained. “I can’t drive here—so my driver, great guy, Terry, amazing, I call him T-Bone, I drop my bag in and left the trunk open. And I get around to my door, and I’m like, ‘What the fuck am I doing? That’s not my behavior.’ ”
The star of the upcoming film White House Down is unique in that he, unlike many celebs, is able to remain somewhat grounded. And it may be due in part to the fact that Tatum didn’t gain celebrity status into after he became an adult. “I don’t remember who said it, but I do believe that whatever age you become famous, you end up staying that age,” he revealed. “Because from that point, you’re not asked to be a normal citizen. I broke through at 24 or 25. I had lived a pretty diverse life. When I was finally making money, I knew exactly what I needed … $5.67. I’d have one meal a day. I would go to Checkers and get the No. 1 with everything.”
Unfortunately, young entertainers like Justin Bieber don’t have the chance to experience a lot of life outside of fame. So it’s not hard to believe that the 19-year-old may be consumed by delusions of grandeur. After all, he’s been in the spotlight for the majority of his teenage years. Only time will tell how Bieber will balance his fame and impending adulthood.
