Does Melissa Gorga’s Book Promote Marital Rape?

September 25, 2013 by Ricky Guo

Real Housewives of New Jersey star Melissa Gorga has written a book that just hit shelves, called Love Italian Style. The advice book is about how to have a loving and successful marriage just like hers. She’s been married to her husband, Joe Gorga, for over seven years now and have three children together. But it looks like some critics and bloggers are ripping her book apart including Jezebel.

According to Jezebel.com, “The amount of sexism, gender essentialism, and caveman logic within its pages is so appalling that it’s difficult to believe that her book is anything but a cry for help.”

They even go on to say that Melissa is advocating marital rape in this book. Jezebel pulled out some quotes from the book to help back up their statement. One specific quote is written by Joe Gorga and one of the lines in it sounds like it’s insinuating rape: ”Men, I know you think your woman isn’t the type who wants to be taken. But trust me, she is. Every girl wants to get her hair pulled once in a while. If your wife says “no,” turn her around, and rip her clothes off. She wants to be dominated. Women don’t realize how easy men are. Just give us what we want.”

It seems that Melissa has read the article and is defending her book against these accusations. She tweeted (via WetPaint), “I’m so disgusted that a reporter has taken things completely out of context simply for shock value. #SAD. If you’ve read my book, you know that I am promoting mutual love, respect, honesty, and loyalty. #TRUTH.”

Readers of the book will have to be the ones to decide if the reporter is right or Melissa.
