Who Is Honey Boo Boo’s Father? Why Was Mike “Sugar Bear” Thompson Arrested In 1998?

Toddlers & Tiaras somehow has a successful spin-off in the form of TLC’s Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. It’s a reality show focusing on the home life and family of contestant Alana “Smoochie,” or “Honey Boo Boo,” or “Honey Boo Boo Child” Thompson, age six, of rural McIntyre, Georgia. The show premiered August 8, 2012 to 2.253 million viewers with its pilot and held onto those viewers with around 2.336 million for episode five (making it one of the most successful shows of its ilk, with comparable ratings to Real Housewives of New Jersey and Dance Moms).
It became apparent upon the release of the show’s teasers that something was… off about the family structure. It was never explained in the teasers who was whom’s parent, who was related exactly how, and how Honey Boo Boo’s mother, June “Mama” Shannon, who’s 33, is living with David Michael “Sugar Bear” Thompson, 40, and her daughters of whom the eldest is 17-years-old. It was wrongly assumed before the pilot even aired, Sugar Bear would have been the father of Anna “Chickadee” Shannon, 17, making her mother around 14-years-old at the time of conception if you account nine months for gestation. People worried that Sugar Bear and Mama committed statutory rape in the conception of that daughter. However, it has since become apparent another man is Chickadee’s father.
Sugar Bear is the father of Honey Boo Boo only, so far as the daughters on the show. He is the father, Mama is obviously the mother, and the couple is not married.
Each of the daughters has a different father. And the mother and fathers have criminal histories. The National Enquirer reports, David Michael Thompson was arrested in 1998: “In 1998, he was sentenced to five years in Montgomery Prison in Georgia for a crime spree in which he robbed a series of hunting camps and set fire to at least one camper.”
Enquirer says Mama’s own father, Honey Boo Boo’s grandfather, Marvin Shannon, has no issues with Sugar Bear: “I like the guy she’s with now,” said Marvin Shannon” “as long as he’s got his dip (snuff ), he’s OK.”
Honey Boo Boo’s father works seven-days-a-week for Snowco General Contractors. He says of his job on his Facebook page: “I work for snowco general contractors in mcintrye for almost 8 yrs I work in the chalk mines and love it.” He’s also a volunteer firefighter in Irwinton, GA. He also says of being featured on the show: “I love helping ppl out my 6 yr alana is into pageants and has become a celebrity from it and we support her in everything she has her own show coming out in august 8 on tlc but we r still common ppl living the country we go 4 wheeler riding all the time and hanging out with some great friends…if u want to know just ask.”
