Jaden Smith, 14, Wants To be Emancipated From Parents

Following in the footsteps of Macaulay Culkin, Drew Barrymore and Aaron Carter, Jaden Smith–son of Will and Jada Smith–wants to become emancipated from his parents.

Will Smith recently sat down with the UK’s The Sun and dished on what his 14-year old son wants for his birthday.

“He says, ‘Dad, I want to be emancipated,’ I know if we do this, he can be an emancipated minor, because he really wants his own place,” the veteran actor said.

The Parents Just Don’t Understand rapper did not grow up in a house where discussions were open. “I was brought up with, ‘you don’t even talk to your parents on what your opinion is, you are not allowed to have an opinion. When you pay some bills, you can have an opinion.’ My parents let me talk now.”

He has two other children, Willow, 12 and Trey, 19 who is his son from a previous marriage. Having been raised in a strict home himself, The Fresh Prince wanted his children to be able to be open with their parents and he and Jada “don’t believe in punishment”. The patriarch said if his children misbehave he sits them down and lets them explain their actions.

Although the Smiths have a very peculiar parenting style, he does state that allowing his children to have so much independence comes with a “backlash”. It is great that Trey, Willow and Jaden feel open enough to talk about whatever with their parents, but how much freedom is too much?

What do you think, should Jaden be granted the emancipation from his parents? Is 15-years-old too young to live alone? Sound off below!
