Jennifer Lopez Covers V Magazine As A Boxer Wearing A Men’s Cup

Jennifer Lopez covers the V Magazine Sports Issue as photographed by Mario Testino.

The cover depicts Lopez as a boxer in what’s a really beautiful shoot accounting for the addition of a men’s cup staring you in the eye. Yes, it’s looking right at you. It’s staring. It’s arresting, and it’s slightly off-putting. But that’s the point. It’s very late 80s/90s Madonna with the use of a masculine energy and clothing on a woman. So it’s kind of stale and contrived, but Lopez is pretty enough to pull it off. She has those cheekbones, over-shadowed and she’s sucking them in but they were there anyway. And Testino’s choice of slicked hair is better than Lopez’s desired “glamorous curls.”

Lopez’s interview is promotion for her new show, so there’s mention of her background and her relationship with Marc Anthony. Included is some of the shoot the rest of which can be found HERE.

On her culture: ”There are so many differences in the Latin community. Someone from Mexico and someone from Puerto Rico have different foods, different traditions,” Lopez says. “There’s an education to be had. Even as I was going through the different countries, there were certain forms of music that I didn’t know about.”

More on her culture: “It really defines you and makes you who you are. I tried to keep that close to my heart; what I learned growing up. It’s something that I love so much. When doing Q’Viva, it was kind of reinforcing that, showing how important it is to me and staying connected to that and showing my kids what that’s all about.”

And the real reason she’s doing a Latin-focus show… $$$: “People realize the strength of the community because of the dollars and the numbers. They’ve always been trying to find a way to crack that because they see opportunity,” Lopez says. “They don’t know how to get in. But people were willing to listen and at the end of the day, as long as it transcends language to feeling, it doesn’t matter the ethnicity.”

On why she’s been so cuddly with estranged husband Marc Anthony: “I mean, we’re parents and friends first,” she says with a smidgen of exasperation. “That will be the thread that ties us together. I don’t know if people expect it to be negative (Of course they do, Jennifer!) just because the [intimate] relationship didn’t work out.”

On the dynamic for the judging panel for her show:“We defer to Marc when it comes to musicians,” she says. ‘When it comes to dance and showmanship, he defers to [King and] me.”

On her movie and music failures: “You’re not going to hit the target or the bullseye every time. That’s part of it,” Lopez says. “At the end of the day, I made those choices. I’ve been in the business now, I don’t want to say how many years. You have amazing moments of recognition and success. But at this point in my life, I try to take it all with a grain of salt.”

On her personality: “I’ve always felt like a tough girl from the Bronx,” she says. “But I have a soft core.”

On the choice of men’s cup rather than women’s for the cover:  ”I thought [the men’s cup] was more graphic… It did make me feel tougher.” – via V Magazine.
