Alleged Kanye West Rant From 2009 Surfaces in Time for This Year’s VMA Nominations

July 19, 2013 by Jennifer Exley

Who could forget the memorable 2009 Video Music Awards when Kanye West hopped up on stage and stole the mic from an unsuspecting Taylor Swift? MTV announced the nominees for the 2013 VMA’s Wednesday, but the main focus was the alleged video of Kanye West ranting about Swift after those infamous 2009 awards.

“Taylor Swift cannot beat Beyonce,” the supposed West said in an audio recording released by Gawker. “There ain’t gonna be no more mother f—ing Elvises with no James Browns!”

“West” then went off on Pink performing at the awards, saying he didn’t even know any of the songs she performed and that he should have been asked. The last victim of his rant was MTV. ”My mother died because of this shit,” the recording West said. “F— MTV.”

There is no proof, as of yet, that this recording is actually West. It isn’t really hard to believe it is him, however. West has had a history of unexplained tantrums (e.g. 2009 VMAs) and eyebrow-raising behavior. This could just be the latest in a long line of rants that probably won’t end anytime soon. It seems that talent, however, is a good enough excuse to go crazy.

“Fans, including those in the industry, have a love hate relationship with him,” says pop culture writer Michael Cohen in an interview with Fox. “He says really inappropriate disgusting comments that get everyone irritate and remind us just how immature and classless he really is, but then he comes out with an over-the-top album so everyone forgets his last rant.”

Yeezus, West’s latest album, debuted at number one on the charts. This makes his sixth consecutive number one debut.

Swift also has yet to comment on this new recording. She was deeply embarrassed at the time of the 2009 incident, but hasn’t lost her sense of humor.

“Two VMA nominations!!” the singer tweeted Wednesday. “If you vote and gets us one, I promise to keep a firmer grip on the mic this time.”
