Katherine Webb Reaction To Brent Musburger’s Comments; ESPN Issues An Apology
January 9, 2013 by Hollywoodite
73-year-old ESPN announcer Brent Musburger took a moment during the BCS National Championship Game on Monday to creep on the girlfriend of one of the players.
Musburger made several comments about the physical appearance of quarterback AJ McCarron’s girlfriend, Miss Alabama 2012 Katherine Webb. Here is a photo Shain Gandee of Buckwild shared on Tuesday, with the caption: “Aj McCarrons girlfriend….”
Musburger’s comments included the following leering: “Wow, I’m telling you. You quarterbacks, you get all the good-lookin’ women. That’s a…what a beautiful woman! WHOA.” After which video of the game went viral and 23-year-old Webb’s Twitter followers went from 2,300 to 230,000 literally overnight.
Webb tells TMZ.com she’s not creeped out nor insulted by the comments, adding ”I laughed hysterically. I was flattered, and slightly embarrassed, but I thought it was the funniest thing ever. I never expected that. I’ve been reading on Twitter that Musburger had backlash that he’s ‘Creepy’ [but] if I were to see him I would say: I don’t think you’re creepy at all!”
This morning, Webb gave an interview with Today Show where she said: “I think the media has been really unfair to him. I think if he had said something along the line if we were hot or sexy, I think that wood be a little bit different. The fact that he said we were beautiful and gorgeous, I don’t think any woman wouldn’t be flattered by that. I appreciate it, but at the same time I don’t think I needed an apology.”
But, clearly embarrassed, ESPN issued an apology anyway.
VP of Communications Mike Soltys wrote on Twitter: “Have been asked on focus on @_KatherineWebb in BCS: We always try to capture interesting storylines and the relationship between an Auburn grad who is Miss Alabama and the current Alabama quarterback certainly met that test. However, we apologize that the commentary in this instance went too far and Brent understands that.”
