Kathie Lee Gifford Asks Martin Short How Relationship With (Dead) Wife Is Going
This could have been… slightly more awkward. Were it not for Martin Short’s quick thinking and compassion for the mistake. The 62-year-old actor appeared on the Today Show Wednesday, during which co-host Kathie Lee Gifford segued into platitudinous statements about Short’s marriage.
As you can watch in this clip, Gifford asks: “And you and Nancy have one of the greatest marriages of anybody in show business. How many years now for you guys?” To which Short courteously replied: “We, uhhh… married 36 years.” Gifford continued: “But you’re still like, in love.” To which Short replied “Madly in love, madly in love.”
Short’s late wife Nancy Dolman died August 21, 2010, age 58. She had suffered with ovarian cancer. The Los Angeles County Coroner says Dolman died of “natural causes.”
At some point, someone must have pointed out that it’s bad form to ask about someone’s marriage when they’re widowed. And Gifford tried to apologise. Except Gifford made ANOTHER blunder by @ replying her apology to a random person on Twitter. She wrote: “I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family. He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I’m so grateful.” Incidentally, @Martinshort on Twitter is just some person whose account has been unused for three years.
