Katie Holmes & Tom Cruise Divorce: Who Filed? What Went Wrong? Prenup? Why Split?
Katie Holmes, 33, and Tom Cruise, 49, have split. After nearly six years of marriage, Holmes filed for divorce from Cruise on June 28, news of which broke today on People.com who got a statement: “This is a personal and private matter for Katie and her family,” said Holmes’s attorney Jonathan Wolfe. “Katie’s primary concern remains, as it always has been, her daughter’s best interest.”
The news took nearly one day to break because Holmes filed the divorce petition anonymously, as in, without names.
Cruise’s rep has responded with a statement: ”Kate has filed for divorce and Tom is deeply saddened and is concentrating on his three children. Please allow them their privacy to work this out.”
This is the end of the courtship that prompted Cruise’s May 23, 2005 couch jump, on Oprah, proclaiming his love for his new girlfriend (hilariously, that incident has its own fairly-long section on Cruise’s Wikipedia page).
The couple were last photographed together in February for the 2012 Vanity Fair post-Academy Awards party during which they posed on the red carpet, sparked pregnancy rumours, which they denied, and then took a series of booth photos. Cruise attended this month’s Rock of Ages movie premiere without his estranged wife.
TMZ.com says that, after some “nastiness,” Holmes filed in New York yesterday citing “irreconcilable differences.”
Holmes is seeking sole legal custody, and “primary residential custody,” and a “suitable amount” of child support. There’s a prenup, yes, although she’s asking for a division of their property.
The divorce reportedly “blindsiding” Cruise who, sources say, “did not see this coming” and he is “very sad.” Cruise was photographed wearing his wedding ring in Iceland June 22. Holmes wore her wedding ring in NYC as recently as June 27, the day before she filed.

We’re right out of the gate and already it’s looking acrimonious. So what prompted this? What do we know right now?
Just a few quick hits from phone calls I’ve made so far:
* Her public play will be to paint him as a workaholic, taking job after job and having no time for family. This certainly helps her on the custody side of the argument.
* He was asking her to reconsider and wait another 6 months. She told him she’d think about it but, with support from her family, went for it anyway, and stopped taking his calls two days ago.
* There’s a rumour going around that I can’t lock down that she wants new staff around her and doesn’t want to be spied on anymore.
* Tom was papped on set in Iceland the other day but there’s some confusion now about where he is. No one can find him. – via Lainey Gossip.
