Katie Holmes, Tom Cruise, Movie Studios: Reactions & Statements
There have been several developments in the divorce over the July 4 holiday since lawyers and some sources have been working to bury certain negative news when they hoped no one was looking.
Mid-week has been full of statements, reactions, and some ill-timing for Tom Cruise.
Cruise’s Jack Reacher movie teaser was released Wednesday to tepid reviews and fan derision because he is apparently too small to play the part of the man-hulk many had envisioned and who was explicitly described in a series of books. The trailer was full of tricks to make it believable that Cruise could beat scofflaws into submission. The whole thing fell flat. But that’s not really the point. The point is: the trailer’s release required a statement from the studio saying they supported Cruise’s backslide into the PR smearing of an estranged wife because there are hundreds of millions of dollars at stake.
Paramount, who are behind Jack Reacher, said: “Tom is a huge movie star for the right reason: He’s a very talented actor whose movies have entertained millions of fans. [His] ability to make a great movie is what moviegoers remember above all else.”
In addition, Universal, for whom Cruise is currently filming Oblivion, said in a statement: “Tom is a true superstar who consistently gives 150 percent of himself to every performance, and we are excited and honored to be partners with him.”
Also, Cruise’s lawyer, Bert Fields, released a reaction to Holmes being sympathetic in the tabloids while Cruise is excoriated: “Tactically we can’t say where Tom will file a divorce case and if he’ll be seeking joint custody of Suri. We are letting ‘the other side’ (Katie and her team), play the media until they wear everyone out and then we’ll have something to say. It’s not Tom’s style to do this publicly. He is really sad about what’s happening.”
Katie Holmes has no real reaction to any of the above, except to placate a New York Daily News reporter who literally pestered the 33-year-old while she was shopping in Whole Foods. Holmes said simply: “I’m fine, thank you.” It’s being called Holmes “Breaking her silence.” Hardly.
It’s become such a “thing” a piece of pro-Cruise fluff in the New York Times labelled the trailer a comeback, already. More specifically “a bounce back” and “career repair.” This portends what will end up as passive-aggressive mud-slinging even though his lawyer’s acting above it all right now.
