Katy Perry & Russell Brand Divorce: What Went Wrong?
January 1, 2012 by Hollywoodite
Russell Brand filed for divorce from Katy Perry on Friday morning via a Los Angeles court. It appears the actor tried to bury the story before another long, holiday weekend. However, TMZ Live noted that Brand’s lawyer botched the timing and filed in the morning rather than minutes before the courts closed which would have denied the media immediate access.
TMZ.com also claims that Perry and Brand struggled for months of their 14-month marriage. Moreover, Perry was on board with a divorce weeks ago and insisted Brand file first because her evangelical Christians upbringing/ parents led her to believe that divorce was wrong (the earlier reports that Perry had been blindsided were premature, as was TMZ’s claim only hours before that there was NO divorce… sheesh, their sources suck, lately). The couple tried to work things out for months, but felt “it wasn’t there.” Keep in mind, they were both pretty obnoxious early December, mocking tabloid rumours of a split on Twitter and to Ellen DeGeneres and Barbara Walters.
So far as what went wrong: there was nothing keeping them together post-honeymoon period. They basically got married based on an infatuation and they had nothing in common. They were admitted polar opposites. Moreover, sources say Brand was sober and bothered by Perry’s partying and it was a bone of contention; he’d rather be home and would ask to leave early if taken to events/ outings, or ask her to “tone it down.” And they’d row about this in public, hence the tabloid rumours.
Neither wanted to be in Los Angeles when the papers were filed, so he left for London to spend a ringless Christmas and New Year’s with friends and she to Hawaii on vacation. There’s no date of separation in the papers, but there is a note that “community property” needs to be divided that isn’t covered by any prenup they may have.
