Katy Perry and Russell Brand’s marriage lasted only 14 months yet their grandiose romance and divorce are still being talked about in Hollywood.
In Perry’s Vogue article, she opens up about her divorce and how she was broken up with via text message. Perry’s text message breakup is comparable to the Sex and the City breakup between Burger and Carry with a Post-it note. I’m not sure which one is more impersonal. After the high of their wedding in India with elephants and colorful costumes, Perry and Brand couldn’t make it work.
Coincidentally, when news of this article came out, Brand talked to US weekly magazine implying that maybe some cheating had occurred. He says, “I really think she’s a lovely beautiful person. It’s just hard, isn’t it? She’s got a lot of options, I’ve got a lot of options, so you’ve got to really, really want it.” So he admits he didn’t really want to be married or work on it and instead just sent a text message.
To counter his statement, Perry says,”At first when I met him he wanted an equal,” she says of their failed marriage. “[But] he didn’t like the atmosphere of me being the boss on tour. So that was really hurtful, and it was very controlling, which was upsetting. I felt a lot of responsibility for it ending, but then I found out the real truth, which I can’t necessarily disclose because I keep it locked in my safe for a rainy day. I let go and I was like: This isn’t because of me; this is beyond me. So I have moved on from that.” Now I’m wishing I had watched her Part of Me movie because I’m sure that controlling aspect was shown or possibly on the cutting room floor after the divorce was announced. Both Brand and Perry have stayed pretty quiet when it came to the reasoning behind their divorce but I’m sure we’ll find out the truth on a rainy day.
Perry seems to acknowledge that she picks the wrong men for relationships. She also opens up about John Mayer and says, “I was madly in love with him. I still am madly in love with him,” she says of their relationship. “All I can say about that relationship is that he’s got a beautiful mind. Beautiful mind, tortured soul. I do have to figure out why I am attracted to these broken birds.”
Hopefully, Perry can find happiness in relationships that matches her financial success. Mayer recently released a song, Paperdoll, that refers to his relationship with Taylor Swift. Maybe Perry can take note of Mayer’s involvement with a young girl, listen to Dear John, and find another man because like Brand said, Perry probably has a lot of options.
