Kelly Rutherford Files for Bankruptcy
Gossip Girl actress Kelly Rutherford’s onscreen persona of wealthy Upper East Side queen is quite the opposite of the real-world troubles she is currently experiencing. Rutherford recently filed for bankruptcy after a nasty divorce and custody battle in which she spent over $1.5 million in legal fees fighting for her children.
The actress, who lost the battle for her two children, must visit her children in Monaco, but it looks like she won’t be seeing them anytime soon. After the end of Gossip Girl, Rutherford’s monthly income has decreased dramatically, as she hasn’t had any work since then. The actress has outstanding credit card bills for tens of thousands of dollars, as well as hundreds of thousands of outstanding income taxes. It is reported, according to the Daily Mail, Rutherford’s checking account has a current balance of $11,487, causing her to force for bankruptcy.
Rutherford’s young children, Hermes, 6, and Helena, 3, currently reside with her ex-husband, German businessman, Daniel Giersch overseas. After their two year marriage, the couple had a nasty public divorce and once her husband’s visa expired, the situation only got stickier. Rutherford then had to fight the battle for her children all the way from America. She said she has made over 40 trips to see her children in Europe. She has also commented on the fact that she has spent every penny from “Gossip Girl, my pension, my stocks” fighting for her children.
The actress, despite filing for bankruptcy, has said she will do anything to move her children to New York to permanently reside with her.
