Kendrick Lamar Clarifies “Diss Record” on Chelsea Lately
August 30, 2013 by Mike Siegel
Regardless if you view Kendrick Lamar’s verse in Control as a way to spark competition or as a way to straight diss other rappers, you have to admit that he blew everyone out of the water.
Hip hop and rap media have been bursting with talk recently about Lamar’s verse in Big Sean’s new song Control and the numerous “shout outs” to other rappers he made in it (if you want to call them shout outs). Yesterday, the 26-year-old rapper talked to Chelsea Handler on Chelsea Lately about the verse’s buzz and tried to explain himself. According to him, his “shout outs” to the other rappers were just to spark some competition and not hostile in any way, shape or form.
“A lot of the cats I named, they’re actually good friends of mine and I basically wanted to show that I’m competitive,” he told Handler. Lamar even went on to compare it to playing basketball and how competitive people get in that type of situation. Of course, as outrageous and funny as she is, Handler interrupted that latter thought by asking him, “What the f*ck do you know about basketball?” Oh man. Talk about shots being fired.
Of course, if you have a rational mind, you could understand Lamar’s reasoning and logic behind his tongue-twisting, crazy rhymes.
“When you’re in that booth, you have to be able to annihilate whoever out there and that keeps the level of hip-hop alive, as far as the culture,” Lamar told Handler.
Consider hip hop saved.
