Critics Slam Kim Kardashian’s Ensemble at Last Night’s Met Ball

May 7, 2013 by Staff

Throughout her pregnancy, Kim Kardashian has been the target of immense and at times unwarranted criticism.  Everything from what she eats to what she wears is fodder for the tabloids. So it’s no surprise that on one of fashion’s biggest nights—the 2013 Met Ball held last night in NYC—Kardashian’s outfit was the center of attention.

Unfortunately for Kardashian, most of it was negative. The expectant star hit the red carpet in a floral patterned Riccardo Tisci gown, complete with matching heels and gloves. And with the exception of a very high slit, the reality TV star was practically covered up from head-to-toe. Needless to say, her much-talked about ensemble was definitely a change of pace.

But isn’t that what we’ve come to expect from celebrities at the Met Ball? Between Nicole Ritchie’s silver spiked hair and Beyoncé’s leather bodice, it’s undeniable that many stars took a risk at the high fashion event of the spring. After all, it is the Costume Institute Benefit and this year’s theme was Punk: Chaos to Couture.

So much fashion risk taking was sure to incite a barrage of reviews, both good and bad. Arguably, that’s part of the fun. But for some reason, the criticism reserved for Kardashian often seems particularly harsh. And last night’s gala was no different. Take for example rumors that the 32-year-old was snubbed at last year’s Met Ball, forcing Kanye West to attend solo. Though Kimye reportedly attended a private dinner at the home of none other than Anna Wintour last weekend, Kardashian was only able to attend this year’s gala as Kanye’s plus one. With that notion in mind, the paparazzi may have been overly eager to critique Kardashian, no matter what she wearing.

And leave it to the tabloids to turn her outfit into an even bigger story. According to Life & Style, the mom-to-be had the dress altered several times to accommodate her growing baby bump. “She’s gained a lot of weight in her arms and her stylist has told her she should not show them off,” an unnamed source reportedly told Life & Style. “So her dress now has sleeves when it was sleeveless before.”

Like all fashion matters, the decision to add sleeves was critical. Not only did she receive horrible reviews, Kim K. may have even embarrassed her boyfriend. “Kanye is annoyed, as the dress is by his best friend Riccardo Tisci at Givenchy,” the source continued. “And he feels embarrassed that Kim is messing with a beautiful piece of art.”

What do you think? Was Kardashian’s Met Ball attire a detrimental fashion fail?
