Marc Anthony Was Controlling, Possessive, Abusive, Had A “Bad Attitude”?

July 18, 2011 by Hollywoodite

Jennifer Lopez has reportedly been planning the “escape” from her allegedly abusive husband for some time now. This is according to pretty much everyone who’s covering the story today.

Starting at the beginning – it’s reported that Lopez has been planning for weeks, if not months, her separation from Marc Anthony. To the extent that most legal details, holdings, shared property and the like, were divided before Friday’s announcement. The couple tried to bury news of their separation after hours, on a Friday – the best time to bury bad news, before the advent of 24-hour media.

It’s claimed by Lainey Gossip that a magazine learned of the impending announcement and threatened to out the news. Lopez was able to stall them and announce it herself in People. As noted earlier, there was no hint of reconciliation in their rather terse statement. They are done, their estate has been divided, custody has probably been worked out amicably, and that’s that.

The reasons for the split are still a matter of debate.

Several sources are claiming, based on little more than a blind item, and hearsay, that Anthony was physically abusive to Lopez. Were that the case, of course it’d be better that she left. However, there’s no proof and it’s not as though she’s going to come right out and admit it.

Well, glazing over that until reports are based on something more concrete, it’s also reported that he was emotionally abusive. Two named sources came forward to the UK’s Daily Mail to basically say “Yeah, I called it.”

“This is not a surprise,” JLo’s stylist Phillip Bloch said in an exclusive interview last night. “Marc is very controlling. In the beginning she liked that because he stood up to her, and in the early days he was very much in love with her and she was with him.”

But the couple are said to have begun to squabble soon after 41-year-old JLo’s mother moved into their Long Island, New York mansion in 2008 to help look after their newborn twins.

“They also clashed when she learned he owed millions in unpaid taxes on the Long Island estate,” said film-maker Ed Meyer, an associate of JLo’s first husband, Cuban-born club-owner Ojani Noa. “The other problem was that they couldn’t agree where to live. JLo’s career is in Hollywood and she wanted to live in their Malibu mansion and Marc loved New York. She was going to move to New York in a last-ditch effort to save the marriage. But last Monday I heard it was all over.” – via The Daily Mail.

There were also less-convincing unnamed sources who spoke to X17Online about Anthony’s rank attitude and how Lopez tired of being around him.

“Jennifer has been very open about how much she is tired of dealing with Marc’s bad attitude,” a source told X17Online. “She couldn’t wait to make this announcement. She has been planning this for months but wanted to make sure her assets were protected before she files.”

Lopez is said to have been spurred into action after becoming concerned about the effect that Anthony’s attitude could have on their three-year-old twins Max and Emme. “Jennifer has been really concerned about how the kids were going to react. They love their dad, but she wanted to make sure they grow up in a positive and healthy family environment. All of us have noticed Jen and Marc’s relationship going downhill fast.” – via Digital Spy.

So Anthony was probably being controlling, possessive, and had some other issues. We’ll never be able to confirm which, unless Lopez speaks out herself. Although, it’s interesting that her stylist couldn’t resist the urge to speak out in support; exposing himself to retaliation from Anthony. The source from Noa’s camp and the unnamed sources are little better than he-said-she-said. But the stylist’s version of events sounds about right. It was rumoured that Lopez broke off her engagement with Ben Affleck because he was a pushover who’d do whatever humiliating thing she’d ask.
