The 95-Year-Old Who Tasted Hitler’s Food

In the spirit of all-things-celebrities, we’d like to pay homage to the now-infamous 95-year-old woman who had to taste Adolf Hilter’s food for poison before he ate it.

For two-and-a-half years, Margot Woelk served as Hitler’s personal detector of all-things poison. As one of 15 – yes 15 – personal tasters, Woelk kept this a secret from everyone, including her husband, for fear of prosecution.

Today, the AP published a profile of Woelk:

“He never ate any meat during the entire time I was there,” Woelk said of the Nazi leader.

“And Hitler was so paranoid that the British would poison him—that’s why he had 15 girls taste the food before he ate it himself. The food was delicious, only the best vegetables, asparagus, bell peppers, everything you can imagine…But this constant fear—we knew of all those poisoning rumors and could never enjoy the food. Every day we feared it was going to be our last meal.”

In her tell-all interview with German publication Der Spiegel earlier this month, she said, “I did not want to live.”

But live she did. And at the age of 95, she’s as alive and vivacious as ever. When asked why she finally decided to tell her story, she said, “I just wanted to say what happened there. That Hitler was a really repugnant man. And a pig.”

Um, duh!
