Mariah Carey Confirmed As American Idol Judge; How Much Will She Earn?

Mariah Carey is an American Idol judge. The announcement was made during the TV Critics Association Summer Press tour in Beverly Hills around noon local time. Carey tweeted her own confirmation soon after: “It’s gonna be so much fun working on @AmericanIdol. As a singer-songwriter, I’m excited to help find and nurture new talent. LYM! –MC”

Two weeks ago, Nick Cannon joked to TMZ.com cameras (while overestimating Jennifer Lopez’s second season pay by $5 million): “I don’t know if they can afford Mariah Carey. That’s a lot of money. If they gave JLo $20 million, they might have to double that!”

Initially, TMZ.com claimed the 42-year-old would earn “$12 million” her first season (the same pay as Lopez’s first season). LaineyGossip.com reported a higher figure, however, claiming the “deal is reportedly worth at least $17 million, not including bonuses and or special requests in her contract.” TMZ later corrected its figure to “18 million.” And now Us Weekly Magazine is also reporting ”18 million.” An Us Weekly source explains: “Mariah is getting paid $18 million with a one-year option to do Idol, making her the highest paid judge on any music competition show.” A People Magazine source adds: “Her deal is rumored to be just under $18 million for one year with an option to renew.”

Carey previously appeared on Idol season seven in 2008 (in the video). According to sources, Carey was “incredibly” late for the recording of her appearance as guest mentor at the Beverly Hills Hotel. She was a “nightmare to work with… not very nice at all.” Very nitpicky. By contrast, former judge Lopez was a “pleasure” to work with.
