Cindy Bacharach, 44, jumped to her death with her infant son strapped to her chest. The baby survived the eight story drop; the mother did not.

The New York Post reports, the woman was in an argument with her husband, Hal Bacharach, 48, when she jumped from their apartment in The Sutton co-op building in Harlem, New York City where they lived together.

She, a Columbia University-educated attorney with the New York State Supreme Court, was found dead at the scene. The boy, Keston, survived the fall since his mother landed on her back shielding him from the impact. The baby was taken to a local hospital where he’s in stable condition.

Two police officers were, coincidentally, nearby and witnessed the jump.

“I heard a scream, a scared scream,” a witness Steven Dominguez, 18, tells the New York Post. “I noticed a woman was falling. As she was coming down, she was coming down on her back. I saw the baby bounce on her chest and fall to the concrete. The baby started crying.”

The woman left a 13-page handwritten suicide note, saying of her husband ”I love you. I’m making you suffer. You’re going to think I’m evil.”
