MTV Orders New Reality Series Following Virgins
August 5, 2013 by Lindsay Cronin
MTV has become known for their scandalous reality shows which feature young people boozing heavily and hooking up with their roommates or whomever they come across. Does Jersey Shore ring a bell? How about Buckwild? Even shows such as 16 & Pregnant and Teen Mom have been criticized for glamorizing pregnancy and unprotected sex. In what seems to be an effort to clean up their dirty image, MTV is adding a new series to their line-up which follows a select few individuals which have chosen to abstain from sex entirely.
The series, which has yet to be titled, documents the lives of several young people (ages 18 to 25) trying to deal with their lives as virgins while still maintaining relationships with their sexually active friends, reports Entertainment Weekly. Their journeys will be filled with awkward talks, temptation, and plenty of questions as to whether they should keep their v-card or succumb to the pressures of society.
Throughout the series’ 12-episode run, the network will air PSAs from the “It’s Your (Sex) Life” campaign which is also featured during 16 & Pregnant and Teen Mom as well as a few episodes of True Life. Each episode will be an hour long and the show will air once a week.
Last year, MTV sent out a casting call for abstinent young people who were planning to lose their virginity. The show was to be called My First and would follow cast members as they chose their partner and proceeded to give away their virginity. Unfortunately for the network, the online backlash at the idea forced them scrap the series completely.
