Pain Of Natural Childbirth Nearly Killed Miranda Kerr?

At the time of her delivery of son Flynn Christopher Blanchard Copeland Bloom – named in part after a deceased former boyfriend of Miranda Kerr – it was revealed by the new mother that she endured natural childbirth. This isn’t quite the time to proselytize the virtues of one form of birth over another. But, OW! As though labour, which can go on for several days, is not excruciating enough, Kerr revealed that she’d taken no pain medication. “I gave birth to him naturally, without any pain medication,” Kerr wrote in a birth announcement on her website in January. “It was a long, arduous and difficult labour, but Orlando was with me the whole time supporting and guiding me through it… I could not have done it without him.”

In the August issue of InStyle Australia Kerr talks some more about very ‘long and difficult’ act of her giving birth.

She elaborates upon her earlier statements that she suffered so much pain, she feared she’d die. “I actually thought I was going to die at one point and left my body,” Kerr told the magazine. ‘I was looking down on myself; the pain was so intense… [I wondered] How do women do this? But if other women have done this, I can do it too. I was determined.’

To her credit, at the time of the birth she skimmed over most of this and just talked about the joys of motherhood, calling her “very healthy and big baby boy” was a “little ray of sunshine.” She’s still singing that tune, but we learn about her husband’s role in the process, her post-baby body, and whether they have the help of a nanny.

On her post-baby body: “[Flynn is] a big baby, 4.5 kilograms at birth, and I thought to myself, ‘I have so much more that I want to do aside from modelling. I can live with my body not being in shape if I have a healthy son. It’s worth it.”

On how she and husband Orlando Bloom split the childcare: “It’s whoever has their hands free,’ she says. ‘When I’m not working we don’t have a nanny. Some nights we have a lady who comes in to help out but he [Flynn] is getting better at sleeping now, so not as often. And if I need to get on a plane for one day of work, I pump my milk and put it into the freezer for Orlando.”

On her work-life balance: “I was working 18-hour days. Now the pace has slowed, so I can spend the majority of my time with Flynn.”

On how she’s raising her son: “Flynn would love it [Australia]; I had such a wonderful childhood in the country. He is going to have a diverse upbringing… While it’s nice to appreciate the fashion world… what makes you happy are real relationships and the moments you share with loved one.”

On returning to Australia for work purposes: “I always have a great time when I go back. I grew up [working] with so many of the Australian designers… Lisa Ho, Alex Perry, the Ksubi boys… they were the first shows I ever did and I feel close to them.”
