Dueling Divas: Nicki Minaj Says Mariah Carey Is “Bitter”

Grab some popcorn, folks, because the drama between Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey just got even more entertaining.
It’s well publicized that the two American Idol judges have been at odds from the moment they agreed to do the show. And with only a few contestants remaining, things have only gotten worse for the show’s top two divas.
On Wednesday night’s show, Carey stirred up trouble. After Minaj disagreed with Carey’s review of a contestant’s performance. M.C. took a not-so-subtle jab at the rapper, saying: “Again, back to the Billboard Hot 100, Number 1 song, which you performed—which is difficult to get. Not everybody has that.” Presumably, Carey was referencing the fact that for all of her successes, Nicki Minaj has yet to nab the top spot on the coveted Hot 100 list.
As if that didn’t hurt enough, Perez Hilton took it upon himself to add fuel to the fire. Yesterday morning, the gossip blogger covered the episode in a post salaciously titled “Mariah Carey BURNS Nicki Minaj on Idol for Lack of #1 Songs.” The rapper didn’t appreciate the headline. “Bwaha! Burn? Shes sad I tied her record for Hot 100 entries in only 3 years of being in the game,” Minaj tweeted. And she didn’t let Hilton off the hook either. “What u SHOULD be doing (wit your messy a**) is asking why a woman SO successful at her age, is still so INSECURE and bitter.”
Minaj might just have a point about Carey. One does have to wonder why a musician of Mimi’s caliber would even engage in serious debate with a new artist. On the other hand, Carey’s assertion that the rapper she loves to hate doesn’t and have any real experience is also valid. Perhaps their feud hinges on more than just a mutual and seemingly very personal dislike. The New York Times posited that the battle between the two is representative of a larger change in society and how we define talent.
In consummate diva fashion, the R&B singer, whose career spans decades, has yet to respond to her co-star. Though many speculated that the war began as an attempt to revive American Idol’s sinking ratings—in its current season, the show’s ratings have hit new lows—it has clearly become something much bigger.
Perhaps the only way to solve the problem is for one of the divas to leave the show. And rumor has it that it might just be M.C. Nicki capitalized on the gossip as she ended yesterday’s Twitter rant. “All dem #1s but JLo phone ringin? Lol,” she tweeted while referencing talk that Jennifer Lopez will return to the show to replace her nemesis. “I guess having a personality, being a secure woman, and giving genuine critique still trumps that.”
In the end, better ratings will trump everything. Without them, nobody on the show wins.
