President Barack Obama Shows He Was Fashionable at Age 17 in Released Prom Pictures
President Barack Obama has dealt with various issues like the economy, environmental policies and gun legislation throughout his presidency. Now, he faces an even bigger issue: the revival of his prom photos from 1979.
Yesterday, Time Magazine released several pictures of 17-year-old Barack Obama and his handwritten note made in a friend’s yearbook during his senior year of high school. Okay, so maybe Obama’s prom photos are not that important to his administration. However, as current high school seniors throughout the nation are facing their end-of-the-year milestones, they may find solace in viewing these photos, allowing them to relate to the president and get a good chuckle.
Obama shows his Hawaiian upbringing in these pictures, sporting leis, a white suit and blue tie alongside friends Greg Orme, Kelli Allman and Megan Hughes. In a yearbook note to Allman, Obama, who called himself Barry at the time, showed his youthful amiable-ness, praising her for “even laugh[ing] at [his] jokes!” According to Allman, who submitted the photos to the press, going to prom with Obama was an integral end to her senior year. “It was a really fun, happy time. We were all cracking up, and everyone was smiling,” Allman said in an interview with Time. She probably never would have guessed that the teenage boy clinched next to her in her likely embarrassing prom photo would be the president of the United States of America 30-years later. Go figure.
To the high school class of 2013: hold on to your prom photos and yearbooks, because you never know if the beautiful girl that you took to prom or the guy candidly peering in the background will one day be known internationally. Hopefully, you can tell your kids that you were friends rather than enemies.
