Reactions To Julie Chen’s Plastic Surgery Confesssion
September 13, 2013 by Ricky Guo
As reported earlier, Big Brother host Julie Chen admitted on The Talk that she got eye surgery at 24-years-old to make her “less Asian looking.”
She talks to Us Weekly about some of the reactions she got when she revealed the news, ”I felt vulnerable and nervous that the haters who hide behind their computers on the Internet would come out and say mean things. And some did. That was expected.”
While those negative comments were expected from many, she also got numerous amounts of support from people. She tells the magazine, ”I was pleasantly surprised by all the supportive emails, tweets, and postings from our show’s viewers who are not Asian but told me they understood my story. To them I say thank you.”
Even her parents are proud of her for coming out and telling the truth about her plastic surgery. She says, ”I chickened out of telling my mom before the show aired what my secret was. I was overwhelmed with love and relief when she sent me an email right after it aired, saying she and my father could not be more proud of me.”
This isn’t the first time they supported her through this ordeal. She reveals that they helped her cope with her decision to get the eye surgery, ”We had a long conversation about if it would be denying my heritage. You know, my mom calls one auntie, my father calls an uncle…it spread to my entire family. It divided the family. Members of my family wanted to disown me if I got it done.”
She has no regrets over the decision that she made and she’s proud to be Chinese, ”No one’s more proud of being Chinese than I am. And I have to live with the decisions I’ve made. Every decision I’ve made…it got [me] to where we are today, and I’m not going to look back.”
