What Is Rebecca Byler Hiding From Abe Schmucker On Breaking Amish?

This weekend was season one episode six of Breaking Amish during which the cast were mostly focused on the perceived mental health and drinking problems of Kate Stoltzfus. About whose past the cast learned when a random piece of paper was delivered to the girls’ hotel room with Stoltzfus’ rap sheet and mug shot for her recent D.U.I. arrest.

Also in this episode, Abe Schmucker borrows money from room mate Jeremiah Raber (who admits in a cutaway, that could have been filmed recently, he’s been “married before” and it “didn’t work out”) to purchase an engagement ring for girlfriend Rebecca Byler.

It’s not until the end of the episode, in a preview for episode seven, that Schmucker returns to the Amish to seek parental approval for the contrived proposal. Someone who appears to be his mother says, to paraphrase, “HOW can you propose?” Emphasis on the “how” as in “how is that legally permissible?” The staged cliffhanger for the next episode amounts to: “I don’t even know who Rebecca really is!” and “She’s been hiding something from me all along.”

What producers are probably going to explain in the next episode is…. Byler was married at the time of filming.

Which would obviously be prohibitive of getting married immediately to another man. Filming took place starting May 2012 and her divorce only came through in July 2012. So she was married, albeit separated, at least during the beginning of production.

In short, Byler married Rufus Hostetler sometime after March 2010 and by that June she was allegedly “weeks pregnant” by another man, thought to be Schmucker. Adding to the veracity of some of those claims, Hostetler said on Facebook October 2010: “I am tryn 2 figure out why in th world abe schmucker wud want to b a friend on face book afterall he left wht my wife.”
