Selena Gomez: “I Was In A Damaging Relationship, I Lost Myself”

August 18, 2011 by Hollywoodite

Selena Gomez has given a couple of interesting soundbites in the last few days and so they’re going to be lumped together for the sake of brevity. First, there’s a quote from the 19-year-old about her relationship with a controlling ex-boyfriend. Ooh, a passive-aggressive swipe directed toward at least one of her former boyfriends; not her current boyfriend, Justin Bieber, 17.

About whom she is talking, she does not imply. However, in a recent interview, Gomez made it clear this relationship with someone two-years her junior would not suffer the control issues of a relationship past (was she in a baby Jennifer Lopez/ Marc Anthony relationship???)

“I wasn’t myself for a year. I think that was really damaging. I felt like it was me who was always trying to be perfect for him,” Selena told Top of the Pops Magazine. “I always dressed nice. I don’t think he ever saw me in sweatpants… and I love sweatpants.”

“I dare someone to try and change me again,” she added. “I’d always be well-mannered and go to his favourite restaurants or whatever. There was a point where I lost myself completely. I didn’t smile as much, I didn’t laugh as much. I wasn’t a goofball. I didn’t get up and dance like I usually do.”

Selena admits she changed herself for her old guy, but got back to normal shortly after they broke up. “And when that one ended, I didn’t know where I was,” she said. “But I got it back and was really happy. My family were happy to have me back.” – via HollywoodLife.

Gomez gave that interview to Top Of The Pops Magazine, because somehow that still exists the better part of a decade after the beloved British television show of the same name ceased to be relevant and was yanked off air (same with CD-UK, the original from which was derived CD-USA). Anyhow, she’s basically talking about an abusive relationship, right? Emotionally, abusive at least. Which can be just as “damaging.” Her word. She was pressured to be perfect, and he tried to manipulate and change her. Poor thing. She seems to have recovered now. She’s only 19, so it’s a fairly short list of abusive partners from whom we can pick… Taylor Lautner, Nick Jonas? Those are HollywoodLife.com’s theories. Any guesses?

On a lighter note, she gave a cute interview about not attending 18-years and over nightclubs and not being the world’s-cutest lawbreaker.

“I’ve had four number one club hits and I’ve never stepped foot in a club!” Selena told Channel 96.1 when she was on tour in Charlotte, NC earlier this month. “It’s kind of funny, but it’s really sweet. It’s kind of cool. So maybe one day I’ll be able to hear it.”

Staying out of the partying scene isn’t the only way Selena keeps grounded. She also is saving her money responsibly and says she’d probably only spend a big chunk of change if she bought a car. “I’m actually not really allowed to ‘blow it away’ because my mom and my managers are like kind of managing me,” she admitted. “So they help me and they guide me.” – via HollywoodLife.
