The Bachelor Season 17 Episode Two Recap: Part One

January 15, 2013 by Coco Liberty

Sean already knows his wife is here and he knows this after just one night of meeting these women. There would never be a real world situation where you’d walk into a room of the opposite sex and say “I think my spouse is here!” That said, if you can’t find someone out of 25 women then maybe romance isn’t for you.

The first date is with Sarah and she continually stresses that she doesn’t want to be treated differently and is so happy to be given a chance like everyone else. Sean surprises her (a.k.a. the ABC producers) with a helicopter ride to a first date of free-falling off the side of a building.

Sarah’s monologue is plagued with this idea of a “fairy tale” and her expectations for Sean to be her knight in shining armor are through the roof (just wait for their dinner conversation). Don’t we all want the fairy tale with the helicopter date? I always wonder how normal dates are for The Bachelor couple after they’re off the show. Are they suddenly disappointed because there isn’t a date card with a date set up by ABC producers? Sorry to be so cynical, but the realities of dating are being enthused over a guy buying you a drink at a bar.

After Sarah’s monologue of initial uneasiness, Sean says that he appreciates her “addressing the elephant in the room”, but he “didn’t need an explanation because she’s attractive and a nice girl.” He’s earning character points here.

They free-falled 300 feet down the side of the skyscraper and he says, “You haven’t known me that long but I’m glad you can trust me.”   Her side note here is “I want to prove to him and the entire world that I can do this.” How about proving it to herself? Why is a man you’ve spent maybe an hour with more important than the girl you’ve known for 26 years? Priorities girl, get them! She goes even further to say ”as long as he’s holding and taking the plunge together, I’ll jump from wherever.” She is completely caught up in the spell of The Bachelor. After they jump, Sarah says “this can’t be real” and she’s right it isn’t!

For the end of the night, they get dressed up, drink red wine, and share stories. Sarah tells a story about zip lining with her dad in Vegas. She says, “through the process and strapping us in, there was this moment when the employees told me that I couldn’t go zip lining and state law said that they couldn’t have people with disabilities zip line.” She was upset because someone told her she couldn’t do something she knew she could. Her dad told her, “This is why you need to find a guy who is strong enough to go through moments like this with you… Strong and comforting… Flash forward, today it meant a lot that you had faith in me that I could do it.” Sean says,”A man should protect you.” What century are we in? Yes she was born differently, but everyone is able to be strong on their own and protect/be strong for themselves. With that, she is the most “real” person among the girls and hopefully she sticks around.
