The Bachelor Season 17 Finale Recap: Part One

Sean’s journey for love comes to a dramatic conclusion with a three-hour special. OMG, I am so happy The Bachelor is over and I no longer have to watch women throw all of their expectations onto one man. Because The Bachelor is such a dramatic and emotional show, Chris Harrison needed to have a live audience, past girls from the show, and useless commentary on the outcome (the camera pans the audience and of course it is all women).

During the first hour, Sean says that he can see Catherine as his wife but equally Lindsay as his wife as well (side note: ABC is making one big Thailand tourism commercial by highlighting how beautiful the country is and depicting it as romantic and majestic.)

Sean is having a hard time deciding between the two girls and enlists his family to bring him some clarity. His family is ridiculously all-American and blonde. I love how his nephew says “Emily didn’t pick you.” Little boy, we are in the present and Emily was so last year. Sean talks about Catherine first and says how she’s funny and they get each other.

Catherine meets the family and they start by interviewing her. She says how she played on a boys’ football team in 6th grade. She broke her arm and then decided to be a cheerleader instead. They asked her what was one thing that surprised her. She said “I was very skeptical and I knew it was going to be a trip. I didn’t know how much I’d learn about myself and have feelings like this.” How is competing for a man amongst 25 other girls a way to learn about yourself? His mom thinks that they have a good interaction, but she wants to see if they have that passion. She asks “how long did it take you to fall for him?” Catherine explains that she gave him little notes during the first week and he reciprocated the third week. She was happy when he got her sense of humor and wanted to reciprocate. It got serious after that. Catherine ensures his mother that she is falling in love with her son and that she’s love for him to pop the question. His mom says, “Catherine is genuine and a wonderful girl. I could see them together.” His dad warms up to Catherine easier than his mom. After her job interview part II with his dad, he tells her that if she becomes a part of this family that he’ll always support her. It was a touching moment and then you kind of get the feeling that Catherine is the front-runner.

Next Lindsay meets his family… they both start telling his family about their trip so far and Lindsay’s voice starts to get on my nerves.  It so little girl mixed with all this goofy laughter. She is way too young, experience-wise, for Sean, and I don’t know why he has entertained this for so long. His dad asks her “how do you know you’re in love?” She says “I just know he’s going to be. I want to hang out with him for the rest of my life. He makes me feel beautiful… he’s everything I’ve been looking for.” I WANT TO HANG OUT WITH HIM? You hang out with your friends and I wouldn’t call a marriage a long hang out session. Also, what is so magical about Sean that he makes these girls more confident with themselves? Without a relationship to validate your life, these girls are insecure and desperate for a boyfriend. Then Lindsay talks about how prayer is important in a marriage along with compromise and communication. What would she know about that? It’s been a couple months! Then she tells his mom that she fell in love with Sean while they were talking before a rose ceremony. Good thing his mom hasn’t watched the previous episodes of them making out. Lindsay is more acquainted with his mouth than his brain or life goals. His mom even has to ask “is he open with you on serious issues?” That is code for do you have anything in common besides basic chemistry? Sean says that Lindsay makes him feel loved, but he’s been missing Catherine.

Overall thoughts from the family… his dad says it is a win-win and that he just wants him to be happy. His mom on the other hand wants him to be absolutely sure because you can’t love both women. If he isn’t completely sure, then she thinks he shouldn’t propose. Okay, let’s have a slight reality check: Sean is 28 years old, he can make his own decisions, and proposing doesn’t mean that he’s stuck. If she wanted the best for her son and was worried about this, then why did he go on the reality show to begin with?
