The Voice Wins Reality-Competition Emmy Award

September 23, 2013 by Ricky Guo

The winning streak of The Amazing Race in the Outstanding Reality-Competition Program category at the Primetime Emmys has come to an end for the second time.

Since the creation of the category in 2003, The Amazing Race has won every year except for 2010 when Bravo’s Top Chef took the Emmy home. For the next two years, The Amazing Race took home the Emmy, until last night. Many people thought that it would win again this year, but they were wrong. There were many surprise winners at the Emmys last night and it was the same with this category with NBC’s The Voice taking home the award. This could not have come at a better time for The Voice. It comes one day before the premiere of Season 5. This could definitely help boost the ratings.

The Voice has always been compared to American Idol since its debut and the reporters in the press room addressed all those issues. According to Variety.com, “the inevitable questions regarding comparisons to American Idol arose.” Mark Burnett, the executive producer for The Voice told them, “John de Mol’s format [for The Voice] is a kind format… There’s no humiliation [on The Voice]. People said these shows would never work without humiliation, and that’s not true. Americans love kindness and great music.”

The reporters also asked him about how it felt winning an Emmy the day before the big premiere, he told them, “We want to be number one again!”

Reporters asked him how it felt beating nine-time Emmy winner, The Amazing Race. He said, “It feels pretty good to beat the show that people think I produce that I don’t produce!”

Congratulations to The Voice on their big Emmy win. The Voice returns to NBC, Monday September 23rd.
