Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise have split after five years of marriage. After some “nastiness” she filed for divorce citing “irreconcilable differences” so Cruise probably learned about the divorce when you did. Moreover, Holmes wants sole legal custody and primary physical/residential custody of Suri Cruise, 6, in addition to child support.
There’s a prenup, yes, but Holmes wants a division of property. The confirmation from her attorney is well-timed, buried late on a Friday which is the notorious dumping ground for bad news, and her move to file first is indicative of their drifting apart in public the past few months.
In fairness, their relationship has always been this dramatic.
In addition to the contrived courtship and the proposal that followed, Cruise declared his love for his then-girlfriend May 23, 2005 by jumping on Oprah’s couch. Watch it again. He’ll never allow himself to be this crazy again.
Cruise offered this contrition during his June 2012 W Magazine interview about mistakes he made including chiding Brooke Shields for her postpartum depression, and his couch incident: “I agree with you, and I never meant it that way. When I go back and look at it, I find myself thinking, I don’t feel that way. I get how it came across, but I don’t feel that way, and I never have. Telling people how to live their lives? I saw how that came across and how pieces were edited.”
