Was Miley Cyrus We Can’t Stop Written for Rihanna? Watch We Can’t Stop Music Video!

Miley Cyrus has been on a press tour for several weeks starting with the radio release and photographic teasers for the music video. The latter was followed by video snippets that… were underwhelming and not even well-received by fans, some of whom have since dismissed the whole song as too sedate for a supposed party track.
The music video was released this morning to… more apathy. But it’s out and it’s basically a thrown-together hodgepodge of cliches (see the new MySpace ad with Pharrell Williams for more of the same aesthetic). It feels poorly-conceived, poorly-executed, but she does look great so maybe that was the point.
Fans have also been wondering about the track since it is SO obviously a reductive version of something Rihanna would have done two years ago (like half of Cyrus’ red carpet outfits look like cast-off Rihanna outfits). And it turns out fans have a good ear… it sounds like a “reject Rihanna” track because that’s basically what it is.
“When I originally worked on ‘We Can’t Stop,’ we had did it for Rihanna,” producer Mike WiLL Made It told MTV News recently. “The idea was more towards Rihanna. She heard ‘Pour It Up’ right away, and she didn’t even hear ‘We Can’t Stop.’” The track was subsequently taken to Sony Music who felt it would be perfect for Cyrus’ record.
