Wrecking Ball: Why Did Miley Take It Off? Did Relationship Troubles Help Her Cry on Cue?
September 10, 2013 by Hollywoodite
Yesterday, Miley Cyrus released the music video to her new single, Wrecking Ball, directed by Terry “Uncle Terry” Richardson (with whom she did a risque studio shoot and posed for Harper’s Bazaar).
The video, as Miley intended, was divisive. The imagery to the Wrecking Ball music video starts off promisingly enough: from the neck up, well-lit, on a white background. Then it’s rapid fire cuts of her gyrating without clothes on industrial equipment. It was a rather lazy contrast of vulnerability/ femininity with the dry/ rough/ masculine background. It’s been done to death and is uninspired. However, as with the VMAs debacle, the intent was not to be good nor memorable nor groundbreaking. The intent was to trend and empower other people to over think her “art,” and it worked.
Since Miley took it all of, some may ask why. It’s aptly answered by “Terry Richardson shot this”. Really, that is why she’s unclothed. But there’s a slightly deeper answer, according to sources.
“Miley has shot with Terry a lot over the years so she’s very comfortable with him and she trusts him,” a source tells Hollywood Life. “She chose him to direct her video because he’s all about pushing boundaries and making a statement. That’s what Miley’s into right now. Miley loved the idea of going [without clothes] because it suits the song — she’s showing her emotions. It’s her vulnerable side and it’s not something she shows very often, so having [explicit scenes] made sense.”
And how did she cry on cue for the opening scenes?
“Miley brought so much energy to the shoot and her voice is incredible — everyone on the set was standing around watching her in awe,” explains a source. “Even though she was happy and in a good mood, it only took like two seconds for her to start crying. When Terry wanted her cry, he told her to think about losing Liam and boom, she went from happy to breaking down. It was very intense and wasn’t an act — the song is obviously very personal for her.”
Another source adds, the couple is troubled but won’t break up any time soon.
“I don’t see it happening anytime this year or soon at all,” the source reveals. “They seem to weather every storm. When things get bad in their relationship, something always brings them back together. In spite of the nonsense that surrounds them, they still are attracted to each other and genuinely like each other.”
